John Hutchison is a UK-registered physician with over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. John was awarded a PhD in neuroscience by the University of Liverpool, medical degree & post-graduate training at Leicester University.
After successful completion of his RCP Membership exams (boards) John joined Fisons Pharmaceuticals as a Clinical Pharmacologist, becoming familiar with early phase product development including first-in-man studies, clinical DMPK, biomarker development & translational medicine.
During 8 years with Fisons (Astra), John occupied roles of increasing managerial responsibility in phase 2 and phase 3, development of CNS and cardiovascular products, and was Project Director for all CNS development projects at the site. He headed the Experimental Medicine Department and was responsible for entry into man to proof of concept for all Astra Charnwood products.
He became Medical Director of Cerebrus, a private CNS company which was ultimately acquired, to become Vernalis. John was Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and an Executive Board Member at Vernalis for 10 years, overseeing the Company's development portfolio of CNS, pain and anti-obesity products. During this time John lead the interactions with global regulators (EU, US) during the successful approval of the migraine treatment Frova, and formal and informal advisory meetings on other development stage products. As CMO, he was actively involved with fundraising and M&A activities, having restructured the portfolio and R&D group during three corporate acquisitions. Next, John was Chief Medical Officer at Renovo, a biotechnology company specialising in wound healing and scarring therapies, where he was Executive Director responsible for R&D. This portfolio was predominantly biological products, providing John with experience of biologics manufacturing and development up to Phase 3.
